A host that adapts to everything

SiteGround offers an impressive variety of hosting plans, including managed WordPress and WooCommerce hosting. Find out if it is the right accommodation for you.

SiteGround is located in Bulgaria and has been around since 2014, but it is quickly becoming the world’s most popular hosting company, thanks to its over 1 million active sites. The company offers powerful tools for seasoned web developers, while promising an easy hosting experience for even the most novice of beginners.

SiteGround offers everything you could want: from simple shared hosting (with a website builder included) to managed WordPress and WooCommerce plans, to cloud hosting, dedicated servers, and enterprise solutions. It has data centers in five locations, spread across three different continents.

They have something for everyone, right? Well, I’m not a big believer in one-size-fits-all approaches. It doesn’t work with t-shirts and probably not on web hosts either.

You need to find the correct accommodation for your needs. In this review, I’m going to take a detailed look at SiteGround’s features, ease of use, and customer support. Join me and we will find out together if this new popular hosting is going to be the best for you and your website or if it is not going to be the right choice.

SiteGround offers an impressive variety of tools to improve the performance and security of your website. What’s more, you don’t need to be an internet geek to use them (although you can be, too, but it’s not required).

If having hassle-free WordPress hosting sounds like a dream come true, you’ll love SiteGround’s managed WordPress hosting. All plans come with full email hosting, a free CloudFare CDN license, HTTPS support, a free SSL certificate, and a ton of performance and security improvement tools , which we’ll talk about in a moment.

If WordPress isn’t your thing or you’re just getting started with your first website, you’ll be happy to know that SiteGround’s shared hosting plans come with Weebly’s website builder. I’ve used in the past and I can tell you it is fun to use and does not even feel like you’re working (but hey, I yeah I’m a little geek).

Now let’s take a look at some of the coolest features in SiteGround.

It doesn’t matter if you are a geek or not, you should care about the security of your website. The last thing you want is to have to deal with someone else’s security breach spilling over to your server. Trust me.

Although SiteGround offers you a lot of security tools, one of its most important functions is its infrastructure, based on the LXC container architecture. This means that your hosting server will be safely isolated from others. It also means that other users cannot take down your server resources and affect the performance of your website.

SiteGround also uses 1H Guardian, one of the best monitoring tools, which scans your servers and alerts technicians of any threats or problems.

If you are a WordPress user, this plugin can connect your website with SiteGround’s WordPress optimized infrastructure. This not only improves the performance of your website but also makes it easier to manage your site, with its one-click SSL installation and PHP version manager.

The plugin comes with other great tools that you would usually have to pay for on premium plans. You can use it to configure HTTPS for your site as it only takes a single click. You can also use it to purge the cache, exclude URLs or even optimize your images and CSS or HTML.

It also gives you access to SuperCacher , which is one of the best dynamic caching tools for WordPress.

This is another of SiteGround’s own tools, offering you some great features that not many hosts offer. This Sucuri tool acts mainly as a malicious software detection system. Although it also scans every page you link to from your home page to check for infected URLs or blacklists.

Whenever SG Site Scanner detects a problem with your website, it will alert you immediately so that you can take action.

SiteGround offers all the geek essentials like one-click mounting, manual and automatic backup and restore, and cPanel. But it also offers some unique features that you won’t easily find elsewhere. Just remember that you will need to create your account in one of the GoGeek plans to get them.

Your hosting comes with SG-Git pre-installed, allowing you to add your site to your own Git repository so that you can download and work on multiple branches of your website code from anywhere.

You can also create merchant e-commerce websites with SiteGround’s PCI compliant hosting.

All hosting accounts also come with pre-installed WP-CLI, so you can manage your WordPress website from a command line interface.

SiteGround has simplified one of the more technical aspects of hosting management, to make the experience enjoyable and easy for users of all skill levels.

SiteGround has a simple and easy to use control panel with integrated cPanel. It is not very impressive visually speaking, but it does serve its purpose.

SiteGround started out aimed almost exclusively at developers. But these days, the company tries to reach a wider variety of customers and I think they can do it. Things are not as intuitive as they could be and there is not much guidance, but managed hosting products are fairly easy to use.

Creating an account at SiteGround is easy. Just keep in mind that the 12-month plan is automatically selected. They are only trying to sell you one thing. Yes, as you have read: just one. SG Site Scanner does not come by default.

Completing the account creation process took me about 10 minutes and I can’t see any reason why it would take longer. You can read all about it here .

When you log into your SiteGround control panel for the first time, the first thing you see is the option to install the content management system (CMS) of your choice. It only takes one click and there is a very good selection.

In addition to popular options like WordPress, Joomla, Drupal, and Weebly, you can select from a list of ecommerce platforms like Magento, PrestaShop, ZenCart, and others. You should be aware that some of these options are quite difficult to install on their own.

Connect a domain and installing WordPress

SiteGround’s one-click installer makes installing WordPress as easy as… this… one click.

To connect to your domain, all you have to do is point your nameserver to SiteGround. Your SSL/HTTPS certificate will not activate automatically, so you will have to do it yourself.

SiteGround’s one-click installer and easy-to-use CDN setup wizard definitely makes things easier for hosting newbies. Although it would be nice if you could provide better documentation.

Take a look at the process of creating a hosting account on SiteGround here .

cPanel is one of the most popular hosting control panels out there, but the user experience it offers isn’t exactly stellar. The good news is that the SiteGround version is easier to use, even if you’ve never used cPanel before.

It is located directly in the control panel of the hosting and SiteGround has removed all unnecessary apps and integrations, so it is clean and minimalist.

CloudFlare is a third-party content delivery network (CDN) service and is known for being difficult to set up.

Wait … did I hear someone say “SiteGround to the rescue”?

You will find that CloudFare is integrated into your SiteGround control panel, making it easier than ever to use.

You can activate it on your site with just a few clicks and without having to touch your DNS settings. You can also choose CloudFlare premium licenses from the same screen.

Yes, SiteGround is one of the few hosts that offers its own performance improvement tools, but are they good enough?

SiteGround boasts its “speed and uptime technology” and backs it up with its 99.99% uptime guarantee.

I don’t know about you, but I don’t like to simply believe what a web host tells me. I like to test and check things with my own eyes (stop looking at me like that. We have said before that I am a freak).

I used Sucuri’s page load speed checker to view my WordPress site. This is not just any WordPress site that comes by default. I took the trouble to install heavyweight plugins like WooCommerce and Jetpack, and to finish I put a template full of multimedia content. I also had CloudFlare up and running. I chose a data center in Chicago.

I have to say that the results disappointed me.

As you can see, SiteGround only got a sad C in the Sucuri test. Page load times were pretty decent in the US, but the farther away, the worse they go. Even in New York it was over 1 second and in countries like India and Brazil loading times have exceeded the point where you are expected to start losing a lot of visitors.

It is true that the SiteGround website had many great plugins installed. But even so, SiteGround is still somewhat slower compared to other hosts.

If you are a WordPress user and you are going to create your account with SiteGround, uninstalling some of the pre-installed plugins that you don’t need might help. You could also use SuperCacher to optimize your performance, but you will need to invest some time.

That said, SiteGround does offer excellent uptime. According to multiple online sources, the uptime is 100% for most months and the average is around 99.99% for a longer period. During my time with SiteGround, I did not experience downtime at all.

So if your site’s uptime is more important than page load times, then SiteGround may still be a good option.

Siteground customer service

Quick responses from very professional customer service agents who obviously know what they are talking about, what more could you want?

SiteGround’s best feature may not have anything to do with its servers or software. In my opinion, the amazing live chat is what really sets it apart from other accommodations.

Regardless of the communication channel you prefer, you will receive a very fast response. They say they answer phone calls and questions in live chat instantly and respond to incidents within 10 minutes. Let me tell you from my personal experience: everything is true.

I’ll even go so far as to tell you that SiteGround has the most capable customer service I’ve ever come in contact with. They respond quickly to any question you may have, no matter how technical, and never pass you on to another agent. This shows the great knowledge they have.

Customer service is available 24/7. I’ve only seen live chat unavailable once, but it was like that for about 10 minutes.

The first question I had was during the account creation process. I could not verify my bank information due to a problem with foreign currencies and had to contact customer support to verify my account. Although I hadn’t technically signed up yet, I got an almost immediate response.

These kinds of issues always take time to resolve, but Radostin, my personable customer service agent, was with me every step of the way. There were no long moments when he didn’t speak to me and he always made sure I understood before moving on to the next step.

When I was not sure whether to configure my SSL or CDN certificate first, Radostin was there again quickly to help me. Not only did he answer my questions, but he also offered to configure both my CDN and SSL certificate for me. I accepted your offer for the SSL certificate, but the CDN wanted to configure it myself.

Although the process took about 30 minutes, she never lost her positive attitude. He always made sure that I knew what was going on and I never had to wait too long for an answer.

SiteGround will not disappoint you in their email or incident support either. As you can see, they responded to me in less than five minutes. In that short time, the agent had already tested my site’s page load speed and made optimization recommendations:

And this was not a first impression, either. All my follow-up emails were answered quickly. This is exactly what excellence in customer service means.

The only thing that slightly bothered me is that you have to take additional steps before you can contact customer service. You will have to narrow your search by categories. Then, when you write your questions, they will give you links to support articles. Only then can you open an issue or start the live chat. This process was somewhat tedious, but in my experience, it was always worth it in the end.

Affordable plans: with a trick or two

SiteGround’s introductory prices are low and definitely great value for money, but you’ll have to keep an eye out for renewal fees.

SiteGround’s Web Hosting, WordPress Hosting and WooCommerce plans offer the same basic packages with the same prices. The prices may seem low, and it is true that they are, but you must bear in mind that these special prices only apply to your first period of accommodation. After that, the prices increase significantly.

Another thing you need to know is that if you prefer to pay monthly and not annually, you will have to pay opening costs.

It is quite disappointing that none of SiteGround’s plans include a free domain, but if you are planning to transfer an existing website to their servers, the good news is that the company will cover the cost of your domain and domain privacy for the next period. Unfortunately, you don’t get this advantage if you are creating a new site.

Sure, there are cheaper options, but SiteGround’s StartUp plan is still quite affordable. However, I feel like the GrowBig and GoGeek plans are overpriced compared to the competition, especially considering the fact that they don’t offer you unlimited hosting.

Considering, for example, InMotion hosting has the similarly priced WP-4000S plan, for which you get five times more storage, three times more visitors, and a lot more of the same features.

That said, if you are planning to host multiple sites or if you are a reseller, SiteGround is one of the cheapest options you have, and you can host an unlimited number of sites.

Cancellation and refunds

You’ll be glad to know that you can try SiteGround’s hosting risk-free with their 30-day money-back guarantee. This is a fairly common policy, but it also offers you to cover your opening costs if you created your account on the month-by-month plan.

But what I really like about SiteGround’s refund policy is that you can cancel your account and get a refund without having to speak to customer support. Just follow the quick step-by-step cancellation wizard. If you are uncomfortable having to speak to customer service to cancel your account (as I do), this is very convenient.
